FIFA World Cup 2022: Argentina wins, beats France 4-2 on penalties

Dec 19, 2022: Argentina won the World Cup 4-2 via penalties over defending champions France in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Sunday, after the match ended tied at 3-3.

This was Argentina’s third World Cup title after winning twice in 1978 and 1986.

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé were set to lead the competition and so it went.

Messi assisted Angel Di Maria’s goal, making it 2-0 after 36 minutes but made a mess by giving up a penalty, and Kylian Mbappe made a comeback by scoring for France in the 80th minutes.

Argentina took the lead again in the 108th minute when Lautaro Martinez fired a shot at Hugo Lloris and Messi pounced on the rebound.

Mbappe, on the other hand, completed his hat-trick in the 118th minute with another spot-kick, becoming only the second player in 56 years to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final and force a shootout.

Gonzalo Montiel scored the game-winning penalty kick after Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved Kingsley Coman’s penalty and got in the head of Aurelien Tchouameni, who fired wide.
