Yet another incident of moral policing was reported when a group of people harassed two young women near the bridge of the Beki river on National Highway 31 in Barpeta Road of Assam.
The two women were accused of carrying out alleged immoral acts at a dhaba located nearby and were attacked by the mob as a result.
Reports on the incident said the women were dragged out of the dhaba, verbally abused and even beaten by the public for carrying out such alleged immoral activities in the dhaba. The mob then went on a rampage inside the dhaba and ransacked the eatery. A customer was also reportedly attacked and was injured in the process.
However, a few youths displayed some chivalry and law-abiding nature, and managed to save the two young women. Of the two young women, one hails from Rangia and the other from Pathshala.
Later, the girls were handed over to Barpeta Road police. It now remains to be seen what kind of action the police will take against those who took the law into their hands.
Incidents of moral policing are not confined to Assam alone, such examples of people taking the law into their hands for perceived immoral activities can be found around the country.
