The 50th Chief Justice of India is Justice DY Chandrachud

Nov 9, 2022: On Wednesday, Supreme Court’s second senior Justice DY Chandrachud was sworn in as India’s 50th Chief Justice.

Droupadi Murmur, President of India, administered the oath of office to Justice Chandrachud today at 10 am at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Justice Chandrachud succeeded former Chief Justice UU Lalit, who retired on Tuesday. He will serve for 2 years till November 10, 2024, as Supreme Court judges are required to retired at the age of 65.

His father, Justice YV Chandrachud served as India’s 16th Chief Justice from February 2, 1978, to July 11, 1985. This is the first time in the history of the judiciary that a father and son have become CJIs.

Justice Chandrachud was born on November 11, 1959. His elevation to the Supreme Court took place on May 13, 2016.

From March 29, 2000, until his appointment as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on October 31, 2013, Justice Chandrachud served as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court.

He was also the additional solicitor general for India from 1998 until his appointment as a judge in the Bombay High Court. In June 1998, the Bombay High Court appointed him as a senior advocate.

Since then, he was written a number of notable decisions, including dissenting opinions against the ruling dispensation.
