Neglect of Bodo Language Raises Concerns in Basugaon’s Newly Inaugurated Fire & Emergency Services Station

July 7, 2023

Basugaon: The inauguration of the Basugaon Fire & Emergency Services Station’s new office building and staff quarters on July 7, 2023, brought to light a concerning issue regarding the neglect of the Bodo language.

Despite its status as an official language in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and recognition in the 8th Schedule, the Bodo language continues to face discrimination and marginalization in the state of Assam.

During the inauguration ceremony, it was discovered that the Bodo language was conspicuously absent from the signboard of the Office of Fire & Emergency Services Station in Basugaon, located in the Chirang district. This omission has sparked outrage among the local community, particularly the Basugaon Anchalik ABSU.

The Basugaon Anchalik ABSU has taken a firm stance against this exclusion, issuing a 24-hour ultimatum demanding the immediate inclusion of the Bodo language on the signboard. The ABSU believes that the neglect of the Bodo language not only undermines its cultural significance but also goes against its official recognition within the BTR and the state of Assam.
