A consultative meeting was recently convened at Assam Administrative College to deliberate on the evolving role of District Education and Training Institutions (DIETs) in Assam under the National Education Policy (NEP). Esteemed individuals were in attendance, including Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, the State Education Research and Training Council Director, and the entire Education Mission. The meeting focused on the changing responsibilities and functions of DIETs under NEP.
The discussions, which involved the active participation of 23 DIET principals and teachers representing various districts of Assam, centered on the crucial role DIETs played in facilitating teachers’ continuous professional development. The NEP-2020 underscores the importance of ongoing training and skill enhancement, highlighting the necessity for specialized local teacher education programs at Basic Teacher Education Institutions (BITEs) and DIETs.
Aligning with the directives of the NEP, the Assam government’s Elementary Education Department issued a notice on November 30, 2022, outlining the roles and responsibilities of DIETs, Block Resource Centers (BRCs), and Cluster Resource Centers (CRCs). DIET Principals have been designated Associate District Mission Coordinators (Academic), collaborating with the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). Additionally, DIETs will serve as District Academic Resource Centers, providing crucial guidance and support to Block Resource Persons (BRPs) and Cluster Resource Center Coordinators (CRCCs).
