Crime Rate in Assam came down

Jan 17, 2023:

While speaking to the media on Monday, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta stated that the state’s crime rate has decreased from 366 cases per lakh population to 200 cases per lakh in 2022 as a result of several efforts made by Assam Police.

According to police data, crime against women has decreased dramatically, from 29,046 cases in 2021 to 12,034 cases in the previous year.
DGP Mahanta said, “This is due to the setting up of Special Cells for Women in collaboration with the TATA Institute of Social Sciences, a coordinated approach by all stakeholders like Assam Police, Social Welfare Department, NGOs, Labour Department, Health and Education Department and due to capacity building and sensitization programmes for Assam Police.”

Crimes against children have decreased from 5,282 cases to 4,306 cases in 2022. The number of human trafficking cases has also decreased from 203 to 36 in 2022.

Property-related crimes were also reduced by nearly half from a total of 29,113 reported cases in 2021 to 14,381 in 2022. In addition, only 85 cases of armed robbery were reported in the previous year, compared to 188 in 2021.

Furthermore, the number of cases pending at the end of 2022 has decreased dramatically from 95,994 at the end of 2021 to 58,908 at the end of 2022.

The police data revealed that the number of cybercrimes reported in the state has also decreased to 1,781 from 4,846 in 2021.

Meanwhile, the Assam Police Department has registered a total of 2,878 NDPS Act cases in 2022, compared to 455 cases in 2018, 828 cases in 2019, 980 cases in 2020, and 2,271 cases in 2021.

During that period, Assam Police arrested 4,691 drug traffickers and seized 112 kg of heroin, 49,000 kg of cannabis, 52 lakh narcotic tablets, more than 21 lakh cough syrup bottles, and 215 kgs of opium.

The DGP moreover said that the use of technology and forensics by Assam Police is now a priority, and that many steps are being taken to use scientific aids in investigations and to set up new Regional and Mobile Forensic Science Laboratories throughout the state.
