KOKRAJHAR: Kokrajhar District Administration has taken several steps to reduce road accidents and fatalities in the district.

On Monday, the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) met in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kokrajhar, chaired by Deputy Commissioner cum Chairperson of DRSC of Kokrajhar district Smt Varnali Deka, IAS.

The Chairperson reviewed the road safety enforcement measures implemented by all departments, including traffic, transportation, highways, and PWD. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of strict road safety measures and urged all departments, including police and transportation, to take strict action against bike stunts, rash and drunk driving.

She also directed the transportation and public works departments to conduct a survey and install road safety signage and speed breakers in areas where accidents occur frequently.

The district administration and police would also increase patrolling and set up checkpoints at various locations. She further called for increased vigilance at picnic spots during the current picnic season in order to reduce cases of drunk and rash driving.

The meeting went over in detail the implementation of the resolutions adopted at the previous Road Safety Committee meeting, as well as the measures taken to prevent road accidents in the district.

The house also emphasized the importance of raising road safety awareness among students in schools and colleges. The NHAI has been asked to make arrangements for adequate lighting on under construction sections of roads, as these have been identified as accident-prone zones, particularly during non-daylight hours.

It was also unanimously decided to continue the ‘No Helmet, No Fuel’ campaign at all fuel stations, as failure to wear helmets was identified as a leading cause of fatalities.

The meeting also discussed how to effectively implement the integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) application, which will allow all road accidents in the district to be scientifically documented.
