Dec 7, 2022: Mirabai Chanu, despite suffering a wrist injury, won silver in the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships in Bogota, Colombia. She lifted a combined weight of 200 kg, with 87kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk.
China’s Jiang Huihua, won the gold with a total effort of 206kg (93kg+113kg) while her compatriot and Tokyo Olympics champion Hou Zhihua 198kg (89kg+109kg) took home the bronze medal.
A former world champion Chanu was making her competition debut after winning her third medal and second gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Mirabai earned valuable points for her silver medal, which will help her in the final qualification standings as she prepares for the 2023 World Championship and 2024 World Cup, which will be held the following year.
To qualify for the 2024 Olympics, a weightlifter must compete in both the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup. In addition to these, the weightlifter must compete in three other events.
Chanu, the 2017 world champion, injured her wrist during a training session in September. She was injured in October and had also participated in the National Games.
“We were limited in our ability to address the injury since we didn’t want to miss the World Championships. We will concentrate on her wrist right now because there is still a lot of time before the next event, “said coach Vijay Sharma.
