Nahid Afrin controversy: wrongfully awarded in the 8th Assam Film Awards

March 15, 2023:

After the controversies that she was given the Best Background Singer award for a song that she did not sing, Assamese playback singer Nahid Afrin came forward to clarify her position, claiming that she was not aware of the mix-up. Taking to social media, the singer from Assam released a video where she clarified her stance on the controversy in that she now finds herself embroiled.

In the video, Nahid Afrin narrated the entire sequence of events leading to the goof-up, after which netizens called her out for receiving an honour that did not belong to her.

When the Assam State Film Awards results were announced a few days ago, Nahid Afrin recalled, “I got a call from a jury board member informing me that I had won the award after about five minutes had passed. After the results were announced, a list was also circulated, and I received it too.”

“Only my name and the title of the movie—Best Female Playback Singer Award Nahid Afrin for the motion picture Nijanor Gaan—were mentioned there. After that, I started receiving congratulatory calls and messages. In fact, the organising committee of the Assam State Film Awards also called me to inform me of the details of the function.”

“I just want to mention that people have picked up on the mistake, and I do not hold anything against anyone, but I will have to say that I am not in any way accountable for the mix-up,” Nahid Afrin continued. The fact that Nahid Afrin received the Best Background Singer award at the 8th State Film Awards ceremony for a song she wasn’t actually in caused a significant uproar on social media.

At the awards ceremony, Nahid Afrin was given the Pratima Pandey Barua Award for Best Background Singer (Women) for the song “Neelate Luka Bhaku” from Nijanor Gaan. Rupjyoti Devi and Zubeen Garg, instead of Nahid Afrin, sang the song.

As soon as the news became viral on social media, it received intense criticism from the state’s cultural circles.

In the meantime, the song’s original performer posted a photo of Nahid receiving the honour from Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary on Facebook, along with a copy of the award’s certificate. She added screenshots from YouTube as well. Meanwhile, Padma Hazarika mentioned in a press conference that it was not Nahid’s mistake but Pijush Hazarika said that she should have not received the award if she did not sing the number.
