One Arrested in Bijni With Fake Gold Jewellery

March 29, 2023

In a bizarre development, one person was arrested by Assam police after he visited a bank to take a loan against fake gold jewellery on Wednesday.

The incident took place in the Bijni region under the Chirang district of Assam, when a 26-year-old man visited a branch office of a private bank to take a loan. He wanted to take the credit by putting a good amount of gold jewellery as the mortgage for the loan amount. The problem happened when the gold jewellery submitted by the youth turned out to be counterfeit.

The name of the accused has been revealed to be one Manujit Sarkar belonging to Dhemaji of Assam. He had visited the Bijni branch of the Axis Bank on Wednesday to avail of their gold loan offers.

The authorities mentioned that the accused had tried to avail an amount of Rs 9 lakh 60 thousand in leu for the fake gold jewellery. The problem came to light when the authorities verified the jewellery and the tests revealed that they were not made from actual gold. The bank authorities informed the local police immediately regarding the development.

Manujit Karmakar had 5 fake gold chains, 6 earrings with Hallmark signs on them, one necklace, one ring, and two lockets in his possession, against which he wanted to take nearly Rs 10 lakh worth of loan.

Later the police arrived at the bank and took the accused into custody along with the counterfeit jewellery. But the point that some of the fake gold items carried the Hallmark signs is a major reason for concern. This casts massive doubts in the quality of gold in the markets as the Hallmark sign itself is considered the symbol for the purity of gold and is one of the most important symbols in terms of precious metals.
